Teaming Up with Kris Moyes For LG

Posted September 4th, 2009

We collaborated once again with director Kris Moyes and his new film for LG. Showing the passage of time in any film is a laborious task but also mixing it with motion controlled camera moves, time lapse photography, interchangeable set design, 3D morphing with two actors was to say the least, a little trying! However, as we never shy away from challenges here at Mathematic, this, like most of our projects allowed us to experiment with a lot things we knew as well as learnt along the way. Here is a little bit more information about our process for LG 'Immoveable Product'

3D Animatic

Our first task was to create the film as a 3D animatic which allowed us to anticipate the axes of the camera, the timing and placement of the actors, timing of the lighting as well as when and where we would need to create the morphing objects and dissapearing walls within the sequence. We developed many different versions of the animatic with the director but in this version we see how the animatic was translated directly to the live action.

Time Lapse Tests

We needed to test the way in which the time lapse worked with the movement of the actors in the film. We did this at Mathematic using a green screen and camera and developed the different effects using After FX.

Set Floor and Camera Planning

From the animatic we were able to use the same 3D MAYA project to give us the exact coordinates for the MILO motion controlled camera. We used specialist software to export the data to setup and rig the MILO to match exactly what we had created within the 3D space of the animatic. Although we were able to anticipate most of the movements of the motion control this method gave us a more exact version for camera axes, speeds and so forth.

Here are some initial workings out we did for the camera setup...

At the same time we worked with the director and set designer with planning the decor. These are the initial plans we did which were later changed as the story developed through the animatic.

Morphing Close Up

On set we used a green floor for the freedom to create the 3D morphing floor. You'll see in the photos on our blog what was needed to be recreated in the scene. The floor below was entirely created photorealistic 3D, the lighting of which needed to match the changing lighting of the film exactly.

This quicktime shows a close up of the actual 3D morphing we did of the couch...
