Mathematic

In preproduction we helped to devise the live action effects of the shark jumping out of the water. We advised the team to develop a cabling system that pulled the dummy shark to create the necessary splash for our shot. There was, of course, a guy swimming with a fin attached to his back for good measure! A combination of real flow particles and stock footage were used to exaggerate the splashes and bubbles.

We worked closely with director Peter Thwaites on the animatic and animation of the Shark, developing playblast animations to get just the right movement and acting.

Modelling was done in Maya and we used mudbox to create the organic and photorealistic displace mapping. We animated each individual shard of broken surf board to create a more realistic effect of the shark biting the board in half. We then precomped the shark and these elements using After FX and finalisation using Flame.
